<br />
Today was my last day of my summer internship, and it was definitely bittersweet. The cupcakes were a big hit, and I worked straight through the day building flipbooks. However, my editors took me out to lunch and shared some tips and advice with me. Later, I asked my editor about what she looks for in an edit test. I have only taken two (one of which was for my internship) and my editor shared some really amazing tips.<br />
<br />
Edit tests are generally vague. Editors are busy, and they typically write up edit tests quickly. So when it’s time to take one, work hard on it. Edit tests are indicators of how well you <b>understand the editor’s shorthand</b>. It’s also a great way to determine how well you’ll fit with the brand. One of my editors took an edit test for a different magazine, and she said she had a hard time coming up with quiz questions or advice. However, when she worked on the edit test for the magazine she currently works for, she had a good time working on it; it was fun for her to think of mockup pins or ideas for feature stories. Her boss was so happy that she understood the shorthand of the edit test and hired her. <br /><br /> When going for an interview, <b>know the brand</b>. What’s the vibe of the magazine? Consider whether the magazine is more likely to show avant-garde fashion or a J. Crew sweater. My editor suggested that an easy way to impress your interviewer is to point out a certain column and explain why you like it. Editors are very protective of the brand, so they want to make sure the intern they choose is respectful of that. <br /><br /> Like I said, editors know the brand very well. When you’re taking an edit test, most of the time you’ll have to explain what you would do to change the site, or maybe discuss what you like and don’t like about the brand. <b>Knowing your audience </b>is huge for acing the edit test. Some magazines may be working on a total overhaul (think Lucky), so new ideas are welcomed. However, you don’t want to fill out an edit test with all of your great ideas but make it sound like they’re so much better than the preexisting ways of the magazine. It’s all about the balance, said my editor. <br /><br /> On my edit test, I was asked for a mockup of something I would actually pin on Pinterest. If you’re asked that question, <b>use the magazine for inspiration</b>; go on the magazine’s Pinterest board and look at their captions. Are they short and snappy? Follow suit. It’s super easy to research, and the interviewer will know that you get it. <br /><br /> I had such an amazing time at the Mag during my internship. I learned a lot, made a ton of contacts and feel strongly that I can achieve everything else I set out to accomplish. Thanks so much for reading my weekly intern tales! <br /><br /> Sincerely, <br /><br />Shelter Intern Shelter Internhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14536620731289305824noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7568837108728882616.post-41506311276716981532013-08-28T06:00:00.000-04:002013-08-28T06:00:01.851-04:00The End of An Era: What To Do At The End Of An InternshipI can't believe it's almost my last day at TeenMag.com! I've come into work early, stayed late, and pitched my heart out, all while building relationships with editors I admire and learning as much as I can. I've got to soak in the next two weeks—I know they'll fly by!<br />

</script><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I've read time and time again that ending an internship on the right note is so important. Here are my tips for saying goodbye and making sure you leave your mark:<br />
<br />
<b>Write a hand-written thank you note. </b>Write one for every editor you've worked on your team that summer. Be sure to mention something you've learned from them and how much you've appreciated the time you've shared together.<br />
<br />
Tip: If another intern could have written the note you wrote, it's not there yet. It's important you're able to explain to that editor how they inspired you and how they'll effect your career.<br />
<br />
<b>Get coffee with your editor. </b>I asked my editor for coffee this week—not an informational interview or anything, I just wanted to get to know her from outside of our cubicle. It was so worth it: She was so sweet, and told me all about her career path, what she liked and didn't like about each job, and where she thinks the industry is going. She even offered to act as a reference and to be my mentor! I am so grateful I had the courage to send that email.<br />
<br />
<b>Remind your editors when you're leaving. </b>Be up front and honest about your editors about how much work you're able to handle before you leave. If there's a project that you're working on in your final days, send your editors email updates telling them how far you've gotten, what you expect to finish, access to any documents they may need, and what the next intern needs to do. You'll be remembered as organized and responsible.<br />
<br />
And after you leave...<br />
<br />
<b>Keep in touch with your editors! </b>Send them email updates and let them know about how what you learned at your mag is helping you at school or at your fall semester internship. Don't be afraid to ask your editors for lunch or coffee next time you're in New York!<br />
<br />
<b>...And the other interns, too. </b>You never know who you'll be working with in the future! Check in every once in a while to see what they're up to and meet up for drinks.<br />
<br />
<b>Don't lose your fire when you're not in the office! </b>Just because you're in school doesn't give you an excuse to be any less passionate about the magazine industry! Read biographies of your favorite editors to get a feel for how they see things. Read an article about something you usually wouldn't to get a new perspective. Read a new magazine. Email a local magazine about how you can contribute. You've learned all you can—and it's up to you to keep it going!<br />
<br />
It means so much to me that you've followed me all summer, Edsters! One last thing I'd like to know: what are your best tips for saying goodbye?<br />
<br />

Hey Edsters!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
I know I will be ending my internship soon, I have started to think back more and more about my summer and life at my job. Like many other college students, I have read, heard, and learned so much about the proper way to end an internship to ensure our boss remembers you past your time in the office. It can be hard and a bit scary to try and end on the right note. I have heard from many that written notes are a must to give all of our bosses and you should feel free to give out your business card as well. Since we have all probably heard of the best ways to end your internship and leave your mark, I figured I'd leave some tips for nailing your last few days before you have to say good-bye. <script type="text/javascript">
var _gaq = _gaq || [];
_gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-11200862-2']);
_gaq.push(['_trackPageview']);
(function() {
var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true;
ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ? 'https://ssl' : 'http://www') + '.google-analytics.com/ga.js';
var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s);
})();
</script><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Give a heads-up. </b>Odds are you're working with other editors, whether it be a web editor for an online story or fashion editor helping organize a closet, it's important to tell not just you're boss when you're leaving. The other day I pitched a web article to an editor and later told her when my last day is due to the fact that she might not get around to editing it or reading other pitches before I leave. Even if you worked with an editor only a few times it is a good idea to give them a heads up on your departure; you never know what assignment they might give you or if the conversation is a good time to exchange contact information.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Contact your contacts</b>. Going off of what I said about getting contact information, do so for just about everyone you work with. If you haven't already, get the interns you worked with information as well, you never know who you might work again with one day. Once you end the internship, email your boss(es) every month or so just to keep in touch. The good thing about interning at a magazine is the work you did that summer or semester will be published a few months later, a good excuse to send an email to the editor who did a piece you helped with.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Say what you want</b>. More and more at work I hear stories about editors who waited too long to tell their bosses what they really wanted to do and the type of stories they wanted to work on. Be sure to communicate with your boss what you want from a career and how he or she many help you achieve that. It is important I have learned to remember that your boss is there to help you (and they want to help you!) Don't be scared to speak up and ensure your career goes in the direction you want it to. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Hopefully these tips to ending an internship are helpful, it can definitely be hard ending such a great experience. What are you going to do before ending your internship?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Out for now,</div>

Hey Edsters,<br />
<br />
Now that my internship is winding down I’m starting to plan my exit strategy. Here are some tips for you to do the same: <br />
<br />
<b>Finish strong:</b> I’ve asked for multiple assignments that I know I can finish by my last day. By staying busy and asking for assignments, it showcases your (strong) work ethic. Also, when if one of your editors is listed as a reference, they’ll remember how hard you worked all year, rather than how you completely gave up. The last couple of weeks will be the most poignant to impress your editors. On that note… <br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<b>Ask for recommendations: </b>Ask the editor(s) that you felt a strong connection with to be listed as a reference on your resume. Maybe you did a lot of writing for them or came through consistently in a pinch. Those are the kind of people you want to ask. Another great person to list as a reference is your supervisor. Typically, he or she is your mentor and the one in charge of your mid-internship and end-of-the-internship review. <br />
<br />
<b>Write thank you notes:</b> It is so important to thank your editors for all they’ve done this summer. When you write your thank you note, try to be as specific as possible for how the editor has helped you, especially when you’ve worked with several editors. By making them individual, it’ll leave them with a better lasting impression. Little gifts are also great to attach with the cards. I plan on buying mini cupcakes wrapped up nicely to go with the cards for all of my editors. <br />
<br />
<b>Edsters, do you have any other advice for the best way to leave an internship? Sound off here! </b><br />
One more week left! <br />

Hey Edsters,<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Let’s talk about <a href="http://www.ed2010.com/2013/07/your-magazine-salary-normal" target="_blank">this money issue</a> for a hot second.
I’m so glad that Ed chose to publish an article about it, because I really had
no idea what the typical EA salary was, besides, well, the bare minimum.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Thank you, Ed, for defining the bare minimum. The line that
struck me the most in the article was that some temp EA’s get paid the legal
minimum wage (lower than any Starbucks worker I know!), followed up by the
slightly less shocking fact that Condé Nast brings up the rear in average EA
salaries with a piddly $27,500.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The article goes on to mention some sort of taboo about
sharing salaries. What taboo? Who wouldn’t want to share and compare their
salaries with their fellow workers? I went back and reread the article about a
week after it was published, expecting the Ed-sphere to be BLOWING UP with
commentary about all this. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
I checked Ed’s salary board. It still the same companies listed
that have been there since I started reading the site in 2010, I swear. I
checked the Facebook posting. There were two comments: A girl tagging one of
her friends, and another girl whose entire comment consisted of “No.” I’m still
trying to decipher what that means.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
After those dismal findings, I decided that I needed to take
matters into my own hands. As work came to a close last Friday evening, I
leaned over to my editor, all casual and whatnot, and was like “Hey girl. So, how much are they paying you here?”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
She smiled and straight up said “$50,000,” because she’s
real cool like that. But then again, if I was getting paid fifty grand when the
average was half that, I’d probably easily share too.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Then, I tallied up my expenses for the entire summer. By the
time this is published, I’ll have been in NYC for a solid three months. In
those three months, I spent $2,750, which includes rent, food, my MetroCard,
money given to homeless people—everything. I then divided that by the number of
days I was here (I was lazy and just guesstimated 90 because it’s like three
months and close enough, okay?)<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
As it turns out, that’s $30 per day. And then in another
fancy bit of footwork, I divided $27,500 by 364 and came up with $75. Wait a
minute. That’s DOUBLE what I’ve been living on for the past three months!
That’s practically royalty!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Just like that, I breathed a deep sigh of relief and went to
bed with a clear head. True, $27,500 is pennies compared to what our graduated
friends in other fields will be raking in. But it’s not impossible to live on,
and people move out of that pay range relatively fast within this industry.
Besides, NYC on $30 a day was all kinds of crazy fun, so on $75 a day? I can
only imagine.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>What has your budget
been like this summer? Do you think NYC is doable on a $27,500 salary?</b>
Speak your mind below.<o:p></o:p></div>

As you probably have already gathered, it's darn near impossible to make it in this tiny industry without knowing someone. Therefore, it's been really important to me to establish good relationships with my editors and to meet with editors whose positions interest me—at TeenMag.com and at Teen Mag's parent company—this summer. <script type="text/javascript">
var _gaq = _gaq || [];
_gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-11200862-2']);
_gaq.push(['_trackPageview']);
(function() {
var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true;
ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ? 'https://ssl' : 'http://www') + '.google-analytics.com/ga.js';
var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s);
})();
</script><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
When I was at school last summer, I emailed my editors at TeenMag.com as often as I could. I asked my editor if I could stay on staff as a contributing writer, and she said yes! I pitched articles and blog posts as often as my school schedule would allow, and I told my other editors anytime I was up to anything exciting. Granted, I don't think anyone really cared when I told them about a cappella concerts I covered for my school newspaper, but it was really important to me that everyone knew I was doing everything I could to become a better writer when I couldn't be at Teen Mag. It was more difficult to contribute when I was studying abroad, but I always would send a quick message about things in my new life that pertained to Teen Mag, like when Justin Bieber came to town and fangirls waited for him outside his hotel—which was on my street. (Some things are universal.) </div>
<div>
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Since I've returned to the office, however, I've been second guessing how much is too much. My editors have each told me that they want to get lunch with me, but when I emailed them to ask them when they are free, they each told me that they were busy. I'm scared to email them more about it since I know they're really busy and I don't want to be annoying! Since I often stay late to work on projects, I have talked to my editors about my time at Teen Mag, what I'm enjoying about my internship, and my future—in fact, when I stayed late at work one day this week, one of my editors told me she wants to hire me next year. (When the h-bomb was dropped I actually pretended to be cool and then texted my mom and best friend about 15 incoherent messages on the way to the subway). </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
That being said, I've realized that I don't just want to keep in touch with my editors because I want a job—it's because I really care about Teen Mag and the people I work with who have afforded me this incredible opportunity. I love learning from them and I love coming to my job every day because they make Teen Mag an awesome place. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I think I'm starting to get really nervous because the other interns I work with are getting lunch appointments with the editors. The rational side of me is saying that this is because the other editors don't know the other interns as well, and because the other interns wrap up their internships before I do. But the irrational side of me is starting to get nervous that I'm doing something wrong by not following up with my editors (even though they keep telling me they're going to get lunch in conversation). I know my crazy lady side is acting up right now, and I need to keep it in check somehow.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Am I being totally crazy, Edsters? How would you handle this situation? How do you keep in touch with your editors? I need your advice! </div>

Say it isn’t so! My last day interning for Women’s Lifestyle Magazine is nearly here. I’ve worked hard, learned more than I could have ever imagined about the magazine world, and made some incredible connections with a few amazing editors. But, my work isn’t quite done yet! <br />
<br />
I still have a few loose ends to tie up at my internship before I leave New York City. With my last days looming: here are three things every intern should totally do before peacing out for good. <br />
<br />
<b>1. Leave a handwritten thank you note.</b><br />
<br />
It is so important to leave your editors a thank you note before you leave. A thank you note is a surefire way to stick in your editor’s mind. Plus, it’s your chance to showcase how much you learned and how they affected your bourgeoning career. Don’t be afraid to reference specific moments from your internship that stuck out, like that time your editor showed you how to write kickass interview questions, etc. A handwritten and personalized card will mean a lot to your editor, and you will no doubt stick out in his/her mind in the future. <br />
<br />
<b>Good to note:</b> Don’t leave your editor an elaborate gift. One senior editor at a lifestyle mag said that gifts—while thoughtful—make editors feel kind of awk. They know that interns don’t rake in the dough and spending money on a parting gift seems really unnecessary. It’s best to stick to well-written cards only. <br />
<br />
<b>2. Speak up! Ask about future opportunities. </b><br />
<br />
If you haven’t already, ask about any opportunities your editor knows of before you leave. <br />
<br />
<i>Can you freelance? </i><br />
<i>Is there a possibility to pitch ideas to the magazine? </i><br />
<i>Are there future internships or jobs available that the editor knows of? </i><br />
<br />
Don’t be afraid to let an editor know that you are interested in other opportunities down the road—it might just pay off. I asked my editor if Women’s Lifestyle Mag accepted winter interns. In the past, only fall, spring and summer internships were available. But my editor is looking into the possibility now that I asked! Score! <br />
<br />
<b>3. Ask the best way to keep in touch. </b><br />
<br />
Don’t forget to ask your editor how to keep in touch with him/her. My editor loves Twitter and practically lives on her email, so that’s how she prefers for people to get in contact with her. Another editor I spoke with is obsessed with tangible mail. She loves it when former interns send mail because to her, it shows a different sort of thoughtfulness. <br />
<br />
<b>How are you preparing for your final day Edsters? Sound off in the comments! </b><br />

Hey Edsters!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
At the magazine the other week we had our mid-term reviews, which were actually pretty late into the summer, and it got me thinking about a lot. During my review sessions I talked with both my bosses going over what I had done right and what I need to improve on. A lot of the time spent talking we discussed my work so far at the magazine and how I thought I was doing. During the conversation I told them that I have an interest in the marketing, advertising, and the web side of the magazine. After talking about other parts of putting a monthly magazine together it made me realize that I have a lot more interests than just the features department.<script type="text/javascript">
var _gaq = _gaq || [];
_gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-11200862-2']);
_gaq.push(['_trackPageview']);
(function() {
var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true;
ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ? 'https://ssl' : 'http://www') + '.google-analytics.com/ga.js';
var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s);
})();
</script><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A little while after having that conversation, one of the editors was talking to us during a roundtable sharing her past experiences before landing her job at the magazine. The editor told the group how she worked in the public relations department of a media outlet for a many years in the beginning of her career, and later told her colleagues that she <i>really</i> wanted to be a writer. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
After hearing someone so highly respect at the magazine say that she had changed her career path from a public relations professional to an editor it reminded me of myself; I went from a PR internship to a features magazine one. But it also made me think again -- like some colleges students through their time in different internships -- <b>what do I really want to do</b>? So far this summer I have learned I love the environment of a magazine, but am I really a writer at heart? </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There is so much more that I could be doing at my internship in terms of types of tasks and working in different departments, however that is not how most internships are set up. I really like what is thrown at me with pitching and writing but I also really like the strategy behind making a magazine sell and digital media. More and more I view my internship as a way to help me figure out what I love, something I haven't hit the nail on the head yet. Hearing from other editors that it took each of them a few tries to find what they're best at, and many are still not there yet, made me feel better that I am looking as well. I love my internship and am extremely lucky to have the opportunity to figure out what I want to do and what I love. I think it is important for all Edsters to figure out what they want in a career and therefore speak up at work to be given the type of assignments they want. <b>What do you think is the best way to determine the best career, inside a magazine and outside?</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>

Out for now,</div>

Happy Friday Edsters! <br />
<br />
A few weeks ago I mentioned that I was meeting up with a <a href="http://edinterndiaries.blogspot.com/2013/07/how-to-network-with-your-contacts.html#more" target="_blank">managing editor</a> for an informational interview. What I expected to be a 20-minute conversation lasted a little over an hour. <br />
<br />
I had written down a bunch of general questions to ask Alyssa* prior to our interview, but once we began chatting, I maybe asked her two of them. The interview turned more into a conversation, and I was able to get some stellar tips on how to get hired. <br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<b>If you don’t have a website, make one immediately. </b>A site is not only a place for promoting your published clips, but also a chance to blog once in awhile. When Alyssa is looking to hire writers, she wants to see more than clips. She said that hiring editors are never sure that the writer didn’t have heavy-handed editors rewrite their entire articles. Just by having a blog or even posting occasionally on your site, editors can see your natural voice. It’s a better indicator of your talent, and strong, unedited samples will showcase that. <br />
<br />
<div>
<b>Your attitude is everything. </b>Alyssa’s biggest pet peeve is when she works with people who “think they know everything. I’ve been in the business for a long time,” said Alyssa during the informational interview. She wants to work with people that will take the extra step. For example, Alyssa has two interns. One leaves every day at 6 p.m. sharp, while the other is staying a little bit later to help break a story that just developed at 5:45. A “driven attitude to help, as Alyssa said, will set you apart from your interns. It will also land you a killer recommendation letter or contact for reference. <br />
<br />
<b>Show how passionate you are.</b> The best thing to tell the person interviewing you is how passionate you are about what they’re doing. And don’t confuse this with fake passion—your interviewer will be able to tell. Be knowledgeable about the company that you want to work for and emphasize why you want to work there. What is it that Magazine A is doing that is so much cooler than anything at Magazines B – Z? <br />
<br />
<b>Become a Twitter personality.</b> When Alyssa worked at an entertainment magazine a few years back, she said that people would often recognize her and share how much they liked her articles. She emphasized the importance of being a personality on the web; if people are interested in what you have to say in 140 characters or less, they’re more likely to our actual work. Alyssa suggested that I live tweet my favorite TV shows with their corresponding hashtags, garnering about 3-5 followers every week. She said if you can show future employers your web influence, it shows that not only are you passionate about your work, but that you’re also marketable. Those are the kind of writers editors want to hire. <br />
<br />
After meeting with Alyssa, I definitely felt empowered to work harder to achieve my dreams of working as a successful journalist. <b>Edsters, do you think these are good tips? </b>But more importantly, <b>do you have better ones? </b><br />
<br />
Enjoy the weekend, <br />

I love the weekends. They are full of endless possibilities
and relaxation and, most importantly, sleep. Saturdays are wonderfully unplanned:
It usually involves checking Complex.com’s list of 10 free things to do in NYC
on the weekend, then getting on out there. Sundays are wonderfully structured:
I start out at Hillsong NYC in Union Square, then go to Argo Tea for a couple
of hours to write for this lovely blog, then go back to Hillsong in the evening
because I really can’t get enough of that place.<o:p></o:p></div>

No matter what you do on the weekend, it’s generally
understood that those two days are a time to unwind from the other five days.
However, because I am a “go-getter” and slightly sadistic, I stalked a couple
of internship sites and found a company that was looking for volunteers to help
produce a fashion show this past Saturday. It was definitely a <i>well, why not?</i> moment when I emailed
them to see if I could help out. <o:p></o:p></div>

They emailed back within three days and, lo and behold, I
found myself on a fashion show production crew yesterday. My official title was
“Backstage Dresser.” <o:p></o:p></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I’ve never heard of the company before and only vaguely
heard of the designer, so it’s not worth repeating here. Let’s just say it was
a good introduction to that side of the industry. I’ve never attended a fashion
show before, let alone volunteered on one, so I had no expectations going in.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
That was a good thing, because for 12 hours yesterday, I
felt like I was in a movie that I couldn’t turn off. The manager of the company
was a character straight out of <i>Devil
Wears Prada</i>, but at least Meryl Streep could command respect. Every time
she entered the area we were working in, everyone held their breath and prayed
she wouldn’t pick them out to yell at them, because it could happen to anyone
at any time for no reason at all. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
She told volunteers (including me) to open doors for her when
she was in front of them. She commanded a fellow worker at one point to get her
a cup of water (<i>WITHOUT ICE, PLEASE!)</i>,
but little did she know that this girl had a whole lot of sass and backwashed
into it before she gave it to her. At one point, the manager started randomly
picking out girls to send home because there were “just too many volunteers”
and the marketing director of the company up and quit about four hours into the day.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Remember what I said about feeling like I was in a movie?<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
It was a miracle that the show even happened at all. Once
things got underway and I was stationed backstage with the models (and out of
the manager’s line of fire), I actually started to enjoy myself a little. The
designer was incredibly nice and gracious, and all the models were the absolute
opposite of pretentious. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It was definitely a high stress day, but it didn’t bother me
a whole lot because I knew I would walk away from it at the end of the day and
go back to normal life. It did, however, cure me of ever wanting to pursue
fashion show production as a career. I was vaguely interested because there’s a
lot of glitz and glamour involved, but now I know that that sort of career is
reserved for a special kind of person. That person isn’t me, and probably
shouldn’t be that manager either.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Who knew that in one weekend gig, I’d find out so much about
myself? I highly recommend checking out weekend volunteer opportunities before
we all have to say goodbye to NYC and head back to school in a couple of weeks.<o:p></o:p></div>

<br /></div>

<b>Have you ever had a similar volunteer experience? How about
a similar <i>Devil Wears Prada</i> experience?</b> <o:p></o:p></div>

<br /><script type="text/javascript">
var _gaq = _gaq || [];
_gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-11200862-2']);
_gaq.push(['_trackPageview']);
(function() {
var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true;

var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s);
})();
</script><br />
<div>
Although I originally requested a performance review from one of my editors, she told me I didn't need one—I had already survived one summer at the mag, so I didn't need to talk to them. (Whew!) Then, my editor sent me an email saying that since all of the other interns had requested performance reviews, I should probably follow suit and talk to her, too. (Eeek!) Since this happened two weeks ago, I had been panicking ever since. What if my editors told me I was worse than I was last summer? </div>
<div>
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div>
When my editor called me into the conference room this week, I was shaking. She started reading off a list of things I was doing well (Yay!)...but I felt like there had to be a list of things I wasn't doing well too, right? Then, she started telling me things the team would like me to improve upon...and thankfully, it was only a few SEO-related tidbits. Huzzah! I had survived my performance review relatively unscathed and, somehow, even more confident: my editor had made me feel really good about my writing and my work over the past two summers. It felt amazing to hear that from a team of editors that I've come to admire and respect over the past year. </div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Since we're at the middle of the internship, my workload has definitely come to a standstill. I've tweeted, I've tumbled, I've written blog post after blog post and syndicated articles in Shine all day for the past six weeks—but if there's one thing I've realized I want, more than anything else, it's to pitch and write a full-length article on my own for the site. My editors are telling me that my pitches are <i>almost </i>there, and I just hope I can make it before the end of the summer! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It's also starting to really hit me that I might not be at working at TeenMag.com after I graduate. I'm completely and totally obsessed with it there—and I can't imagine <i>not</i> writing for the site anymore. I really hope there's a position open for me at TeenMag.com, and if there's not, there's something available at TeenMag's parent company. It's a really incredible company, and I'd love to be a part of it. Are you getting sad about the end of your internships, Edsters? Are you completing your mid-internship goals? I'd love to hear how your summers are going! </div>

Last Friday was surprisingly slow for Women’s Lifestyle Mag, so I was finally able to snag 30 minutes with my supervisor for an informational interview. Score! <br />
<br />
Because I'm an incoming senior and soon-to-be graduate, I decided to ask my editor for her best advice on landing a job post-grad. My editor graduated only a few years ago, so she understands what upcoming graduates can look forward to. I feel so much more confident about navigating the world of magazines after our chat! So, I wanted to share some of my editor’s best tips with all of you. I’ve listed three of my favorite bits of advice below. Read on and add your editor’s tips in the comments!<br />
<br />
<b>1) Realize that you aren’t going to have a job by graduation</b> <br />
<br />
It’s really hard to watch non-media friends land jobs a year before they graduate—but don’t let your friends’ job offers discourage you! It’s probably not realistic to look for a job until after graduation. Magazine employers won’t hire unless they have a position available. Plus, when they do hire, they want the person to start tomorrow (or yesterday, if we’re being honest!) So don’t fret if you are collecting your diploma without a having a job offer. Expect to spend a few months after graduation searching for a job. And feel lucky if you get a job in that amount of time (a took a few of my editor’s friends years to land their first gig). <br />
<br />
<b>2) In the meantime…</b><br />
<br />
Don’t forget to keep your writing skills sharp. Maintain a blog and write every day. It’s also a good idea to write in the voice and style of the magazines that you are applying to. Blog posts can act as another set of clips—but only if they are well written and speak to the audience of the magazine you are applying to. <br />
<br />
Aaand keep in contact. Your editor is one of your best resources, as they will have the inside scoop on what jobs are available. Just be sure to maintain a mutual relationship—you don’t want to be the person that uses an editor only when you need something! Think about sending your editor an email every few months just to let them know what you are up to. You might also mention how much you liked an article they wrote recently or send them a link to something you think they’d find interesting. <br />
<br />
<b>3) Find your calling</b><br />
<br />
Do you love books? It’s book editing for you! Are you a pop culture junkie? Entertainment editing is probably your jam. Are you always dishing out advice on the latest beauty trends? Hello, future beauty editor! <br />
<br />
It’s important to be a specialist in the magazine industry. This is sometimes problematic for young writers because we are so excited to be writing at all! But, editors decide on an expertise at some point, and if you are able to figure out what this expertise is early on, you will stand out from other entry-level candidates. <br />
<br />
<br />
<b>What about you Edsters? Have you received any great advice on landing a job after graduation? Sound off in the comments below! </b><br />

Hey Edsters!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
I'll be the first to admit it, I am extremely shy and sometimes do not advocate enough for myself, whether it be in the office or outside of work. As I continue through my internship I am realizing it is extremely <b>important to take chances</b>, connect with whoever comes your way, and always be thinking about how you can help you boss. Over the past few weeks our web staff and other departments have met with groups of interns to give us workshops on success in the magazine industry that are also relevant to other fields. The pattern and theme of all of these meetings seemed to be the importance of reaching out to editors and making connections. Growingly I am realizing how important knowing people in your industry is. <script type="text/javascript">
var _gaq = _gaq || [];
_gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-11200862-2']);
_gaq.push(['_trackPageview']);
(function() {
var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true;
ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ? 'https://ssl' : 'http://www') + '.google-analytics.com/ga.js';
var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s);
})();
</script><br />
<div>
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div>
I am naturally a shy person when meeting new people. At work I do get to know my two bosses pretty well but only on a professional level. I still find myself at times scared to ask if I can pitch certain ideas or nervous to reach out to help with parts of work. And to be honest, my fears at work are extremely irrational. It usually takes me a while, and probably some of you Edsters too out there, to built up the courage to send a pitch by the lifestyle editor or ask marketing if they need help with clients.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This week when I saw that other interns in the office were getting their stories published online after pitching to the web editors and I got annoyed with myself for not already trying that. I then realized that <i>nothing</i> is holding me back from doing the same and that I am just as worthy and skilled as them. Overcoming fear is extremely shard and I came up with a way to realize that <i>I can beat it</i>. I thought about what fears could be holding me back, not just from pitching but from taking risks. They include:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
- <b>Failure</b></div>
<div>
- <b>Not being good enough</b></div>
<div>
- <b>Rejection</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Sounds of <b>silly</b>, right? To let all of these fears that will most likely not happen stop myself at work. When pitching, reaching out to editors to meet for coffee, or even when simply completing an assignment is it important to realize that your fears are not worth holding you back.</div>
<div>
<br />
What are you most afraid of at work when taking chances?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

Out for now!</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
Happy Friday Edsters!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Sometimes it can be really hard to stay motivated at your unpaid internship. Maybe you’re doing some <a href="http://edinterndiaries.blogspot.com/2013/07/the-art-of-pinterest.html" target="_blank">pointless work</a>, or worse, doing someone else’s work. However, here are a three few ways to keep you motivated through the rough days: </div>
<div>
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div>
<b>Experience</b> – if you can think of at least one of two things you learned at your internship, you’re time was not wasted. I learned how to use CMS on the job, which is more valuable than learning in a classroom. When I remind myself that I’m more educated now than I was when I got here, it makes me a bit happier. Also, it’s killer for your resume. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Networking</b> – just by being meeting people you’re networking, which is a really cool concept. I recently met the art intern at my job, and we hit it off immediately. Once we started talking and she learned that this internship is my first, she gave me a lot of great tips for keeping in touch with my bosses at the Mag. It’s pretty amazing how friendly people are and what you can learn for them. <br />
<br />
<b>Learning</b> – you get to see the work that is put into running a magazine. I’ve took part in pre- and post-production camera shoots, assembling a team for various projects, brainstorming ideas for articles, wrote articles and tips, learned about CMS, HTML, SEO and so much more, and that was mostly from observing the people around me work so well together. </div>
<div>
<br />
Although I knew I wanted to be a journalist, I wasn’t sure whether editing or writing or something completely different would be right for me. After this internship, I have a clearer idea of what I want to do. That information is invaluable. So yes, <b>unpaid internships are the worst, but they’re not really the worst.</b> And they don’t last forever. <br />

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This week was a d-o-<i>oozy</i>. I failed to receive a freelancer check on time (yay! more cheese sandwiches for breakfast/lunch/dinner!) and I was a witness to one of the most heartbreaking things I've heard yet about this tough industry that we love so much.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
One of my closest friends here is an aspiring 30-year-old social media guru. She has an undergraduate degree. She has a graduate degree. And... she's still searching for a job. It's tough to watch, especially when I'm gearing up to graduate next May.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
On Monday, she finally got that envious second interview by a fashion PR company that was looking for a new digital media manager. We were both dying of excitement. Unfortunately, she walked out of the office thinking that she had bombed the interview.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But wait! On Tuesday, she was called back in and, gasp, hired! As a freelancer for a trial period (which is normal these days, or so I hear), but still. And at $22/hour, no less. Things were looking up.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
She went in on Wednesday to help the company out with a couple of huge events that were happening this week. As far as I know, she sent emails and collected Twitter handles. Hundreds of them. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Fast forward to Thursday. Halfway through the day, I get this text: "So, I got fired."</div>
<div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div>
My heart dropped into my stomach. <i>How? Why? </i>Certainly not because she spelled one Twitter handle wrong, right? </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As far as she could tell, it seemed like the company needed some extra hands for their events, and then after the bulk of the work had been finished, they were pretty finished with her too. The only explanation she got was: "I don't think it's going to work out."</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Having just witnessed that debacle, I was feeling pretty low about all this career business. I'm going through a soul-searching period right now, and I made a coffee date with an old editor I used to work for to try and clear the air. Basically, I wanted to hear how much she loved my work and how I'll have no problem finding a job, I'm in the perfect position, etc., etc.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Obviously, that didn't happen, because that senior editor is not my personal cheerleader. What I heard instead was even better. She listened quietly as I poured out my heart, telling her all that I had been feeling about second-guessing writing and how it felt too late to turn back now. It wasn't my finest moment, but hey, I was desperate.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
When I finally finished my self-pitying stream of nonsense, she smiled and leaned in. "Honey, you haven't even<i> graduated</i> yet," she said, laughing a little. "What I wouldn't give to be back in your position, when I actually had one day a week off work and I could relax a little." At this point she looked at me knowingly, and I actually believed that she did miss being back in school for a second. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
"But..." I sputtered, at a loss for words. "What about if I'm at the wrong school, or in the wrong major..."</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
"Child," she said, throwing up her hands. "I was a psych major at the University of Michigan." (She's now a senior market editor at a top fashion magazine—my favorite one, actually). "Just enjoy your time now. It's all going to be okay."</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And for some reason, by the end of our 10 minute conversation, I did feel a lot more confident in myself. She hadn't told me anything I wanted to hear, but maybe that's because it wasn't what I needed to hear. If a psych major from a huge state school could get one of the top jobs at a top fashion magazine, I think I might be able to work my own doubt out. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As always, I'll keep you posted on how my newfound confidence plays out. But for now: <b>Have you heard any great advice lately? What keeps you motivated through your own self-doubt?</b></div>

Honestly, the concept sounded corny to me—and why would a busy editor want to spend time with a lowly intern?<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It wasn't until the web department started growing that I found editors I could consider my mentors. Don't get me wrong, my supervisor was (and still is!) one of my favorite bosses, but I developed a great working relationship with three of the editors. I think one of the reasons we became closer than I was to my supervisor is because we all started our new positions within four weeks of each other. Since I started as the other interns were ending their internships, I was super intimidated by them—but since the editors were cool with asking me questions, I felt like I wouldn't be bothering them if I asked them for help, too. <script type="text/javascript">

Soon, asking each other questions about how our CMS worked turned into attending the same work events, following each other on Twitter, and talking about our personal lives. They even took me out to lunch every once in a while! Dare I say it, I was making friends with people I admired! I still couldn't believe that editors wanted to take the time out of their day to talk to <i>me</i>. And while I felt comfortable enough to ask them for career advice and guidance, it didn't hurt that when they wanted an important job done, I was the intern they asked for help. Surrounding myself with talented editors made me grow personally and professionally—so much so that I knew I needed to come back to TeenMag.com this summer. If you can find a mentor at your internship, you'll learn way more about the industry than an HR rep can tell you. Here are some tips for finding—and maintaining—a great relationship with an editor: </div>
<div>
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div>
<b>1) Know your place. </b>You're not going to be getting drinks with your mentor on a Friday night. They have a life, and so do you. If you feel like an editor is too busy to mentor you, no worries—they're just not the ideal mentor for you. You want someone who will challenge, inspire, and take the time out to help you grow during your internship. But they're not Yoda either, and you're not always going to be able to talk to them. Being realistic about your relationship leaves you open to finding editors on staff who could mentor you. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>2) Be friendly! </b>You never know who your mentor could be, so be friendly to everyone on staff that you meet. Besides, being polite and friendly gives off a great impression. You want to be the intern everyone remembers no matter what! And hey, no shame in asking friendly editors around the office to coffee, either. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>3) Know what you want. </b>Do you want a mentor because you want career advice, guidance on how to approach a story, or just some advice on where to get good takeout in New York? When you know what you want, think about what you can bring to the table. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>4) Mentorships aren't a one way street. </b>When your mentor needs someone to help with a task, they need to know they can rely on you. And since you have such a special relationship with a mentor, you always want to help them out to the best you can. And if you know there's something your know your mentor would love—an article about something they're interested in, a book they'd love to read, contact info for an alumni from your school at another magazine —send it over! Major karma points for everyone involved! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>5) Keep in touch. </b>I cannot stress this enough. One of my mentors didn't always respond to my emails when I was at school, but she's busy, and so am I. It's just important to remind them that you still appreciate their guidance and advice, even when you can't be at the magazine. And most importantly, be grateful—they're investing energy in you, so make sure you write a super special thank you in your last week of your internship and follow-up emails throughout the year. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>I'd love to know—do you have a mentor at your internship? How do you maintain a great working relationship with your editors? Let me know in the comments section! </b></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
<b>Until next time, </b></div>

Hello Edsters!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
This past week at the magazine we were given the task to find trends happening that the readers should know about. The ideas we later discussed were then turned into possible pitch ideas for the other editors or web blog posts. My boss gave me and the other features interns great tips about finding stories and the importance of making sure the voice is tailored to the publication and a story the readers would read. A got a lot of tips from the meeting and later found one of my ideas was added to a pitch made by the editor, which was extremely exciting. One fun part of interning at magazine is that you get to see your ideas and hard work in print a few months after the magazine is released. I took away a lot of information and included below some of the highlights. Writing for each magazine is completely different but hopefully these tools and tips are relatable for any publication. <script type="text/javascript">
var _gaq = _gaq || [];
_gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-11200862-2']);
_gaq.push(['_trackPageview']);
(function() {
var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true;
ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ? 'https://ssl' : 'http://www') + '.google-analytics.com/ga.js';
var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s);
})();
</script><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Timing</b> - Because magazines articles are written long before they are published, make sure the story will be relevant in a few months. Ensure that the readers will care about the issues you're writing about and even topics tied to the months of publication, like a new development in cancer research for October breast cancer month. Although you can't publish breaking news, writing long form gives you the time to dig deep in research. </div>
<div>
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div>
<b>Read </b>- Past examples of articles from the magazine are the best tools. I read old hed and dex before I pitch my own to make sure I can be consistent with publications. <b>Voice is key. </b>You don't want to write, for example, an article for Washington Post that sounds likes its for the readers of Seventeen. The topics of importance are as different as the audience members. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Dig</b> - This may be seem obvious but you need to become in a way an Internet stalker to really find the best stories. Not everything will be on the front of the <i>New York Times.</i> The best stories are one posted on small blog sites that can be connected to many other stories, including when you see a pattern. Look for trends that are developing and emerging. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Brainstorm</b> - I get the best ideas when I see an interesting article and then my friend at work also read something similar. With others in the office I have done my best work because together we can almost act as editors. Bouncing ideas off of an other is important but it is also key to stick to your story and the angle you want to take.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
One more great tip when pitch: <b>start with a hed and dex</b>, then write the story! Knowing the direction you're going in is important when it comes to telling your editors about it. Plus, it helps you have a clear idea of the research you need to do and the way to develop it.</div>

<div>
Hey Edsters, </div>
<br /> This week I had the much-anticipated mid-internship review. My supervisor and I discussed what I was doing well and what I needed to work on (and thankfully my <a href="http://edinterndiaries.blogspot.com/2013/06/dress-code-disaster-what-does-stylish.html">choice of clothing</a> was not an issue). More importantly, she had me write down the kind of assignments I wanted to be assigned (assist on a photo shoot, attend a press release, etc.). <br /><a name='more'></a><br /> As a budding journalist, I want to get my grubby little hands over every press release sent to the Mag to secure a by-line. My supervisor told me she is going to try to get me those kind of assignments, and I’m just so excited. <br /><br /> The one thing I’ve learned at my internship thus far is that I do not want to be a web editor. Primarily working with social media is not something I aspire to do: I want to research, investigate, write and attend fab parties in the process. I want to be hands-on with a piece rather than promoting someone else's work.<br /><br /> Although this isn’t my dream internship, it’s my dream locale. I would absolutely love to write for this Mag in the future, but I definitely don’t want to be an editor. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to find out what I don’t want. <br /><br /> <b>Edsters, have you had an internship (or job!) that helped put you on the right path?</b> Share your story here! <br /><br /> Have a fabulous weekend, <br /><br />Shelter Intern

Hey Edsters,<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So, this may be a weird topic to bring up mid-internship,
but I learned this week that ‘keeping in touch’ is not just reserved for emails
between you and your internship supervisor. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
First of all, I have no idea what kind of animal the phrase
“keep in touch!” really is. I used to think it was just something that
supervisors felt obligated to say at the end of an internship. <i>But really</i>, I thought, <i>who wants loads of emails in their inbox
about whatever my next internship happened to be?</i> <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Case in point: 1.5 years ago, I bussed into New York City
over the winter semester to complete my first big magazine industry internship.
It was a glorious lesson in what really went down at one of my favorite
magazines. As it turns out, it involved a lot of twelve-hour days and aching
feet, accompanied by falling asleep over dinner every single night.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I’m sure some of you have experienced the same.<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
At the end of my 4 weeks, I walked off with an inordinate
amount of free clothes, a pat on the back, and that silly phrase ringing in my
ears: “Keep in touch!” I wasn’t exactly sure what that meant; but ever the
optimist, I was like ‘hey, this is really cool, I AM going to keep in touch via
a email every couple of months or so.’<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In February, I emailed with well wishes and a little bit of
gushing about how cool it was to see spreads that I had worked on come to life
in the March issue.<o:p></o:p></div>

In April, I emailed about my plans for my next internship, when
I’d be in the city next, and threw in something about catching up over a cup of
coffee sometime.<o:p></o:p></div>

I’m not going to lie, it was a little heartbreaking. True, I
hadn’t been there for long but I swear, I wasn’t a wallflower while I was there!
I was a little bitter about it, and I ended up just projecting that experience
onto the industry as a whole. I reached the (wrong) conclusion that by, “Keep
in touch” a lot of people really just meant, “It’s been real, good luck with
whatever you do next.”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Fast forward to six months ago. Once again, I bussed myself
to New York City for a winter internship at another magazine I adore. Not much
had changed in the area of 12-hour days accompanied by falling asleep at the
same time as my grandma, but this time I was more prepared for it. Also, this
time I got paired up with the senior market editor for personal assistance
during the span of my internship. She had just moved into the position, and was
probably the chillest senior market editor I will ever have the opportunity to
meet. She regularly wore jeans, white t-shirts, and skipped makeup most days.
Someone spelled her name wrong on the board in the fashion closet and she was
like ‘eh, whatever.’ <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I instantly fell in career-oriented love.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
At the end of my internship, we rode the subway to our
respective stops together and she said nice things and wished me luck in the
coming semester. In February, I emailed her about the March issue, and she
emailed back within five days. Mid-June, I emailed her about being a reference
for a freelance position I was applying for her.<o:p></o:p></div>

<i>Well</i>, I thought, <i>that was fun while it lasted.</i> But wait! Last Monday, I was shocked when I
logged into my email to find a message from her waiting in my inbox. She
apologized profusely for her late response, and said that she’d be happy to be
a reference for me. I was stunned. Because I can’t just let good things be, I
emailed back saying “thanks so much” and then moved in for the kill: “Want to
grab coffee sometime?”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Edsters, we’re getting coffee together next Thursday.<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
That success on Monday spurred me to try harder on this
whole keeping in touch business. On Tuesday, I came across a funny Trader Joe’s
rant that had gone viral. It made me think of a conversation I had had at an
event with a junior staff member of another popular website in the same field.
The event had been weeks ago, but I found her address and emailed her anyways,
pasting in the link and wishing her well. She responded with plenty of
exclamation points in under an hour.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
On Wednesday, the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalists were
announced, and I remembered that I had briefly emailed one of the designers
last summer during a remote menswear-related internship. Even though there’s no
way he would have remembered me, I emailed him a congratulatory note because
hey, why not? I got a response within two hours.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Thursday night, I went to a private dinner event in place of
my editor, who couldn’t make it last minute. I sat right next to the founder of
a popular urban fashion blog, and the next day, I emailed saying how great it
was to meet her. She emailed back within an hour saying the same and ending
with, of course: “Keep in touch!”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Basically, I think I managed to teach myself within five
days that not everybody is out to ignore all my emails. In fact, I think it’s
quite the opposite. The industry is small and the more connected you stay, the more
everyone will remember you fondly. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So, I hope this encourages you to trust in the power of
sending a nice email simply to “keep in touch.” And if you don’t get a
response, don’t let it hold you back from sending the next email. <b>Now, I’m dying to know, do you have any
great stories about keeping in touch? </b><o:p></o:p></div>

Though I'm positive I'll be staying on as a Contributing Writer while I'm at college, I know it's not going to be the same as being in the office every day. This time around, there's no guarantee that I'll have the opportunity to go back to TeenMag.com. Eek! <script type="text/javascript">
var _gaq = _gaq || [];
_gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-11200862-2']);
_gaq.push(['_trackPageview']);
(function() {
var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true;
ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ? 'https://ssl' : 'http://www') + '.google-analytics.com/ga.js';
var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s);
})();
</script><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Unfortunately, it seems like EVERYONE—from the competitive intern I work with to my friends and parents—are under the impression that I'll definitely be offered a position at TeenMag.com when I graduate next year. I would absolutely love to work at TeenMag.com, but as we in the magazine industry know, there's no guarantee there will be a spot on staff for me next summer. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I've been meeting with alumni from my school in the magazine industry, attending Ed2010 events (maybe I met some of you there!), asking editors from other departments to coffee, and pitching stories to TeenMag.com as often as I can. I feel like I've been taking all of the opportunities I can while at Teen Mag, and have complete faith that when it's time for me to apply for a job, something will fall into place. I know that my family and friends want the best for me, but it's making me crazy that every family dinner conversation somehow revolves around earning a position at Teen Mag.<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For now, I'm just trying to focus on the positives—I have an incredible internship, and I'm lucky that I love every minute of it! My department is absolutely fantastic, and I don't only love what I'm doing, I love the people I'm working with. I just have to take confidence in the fact that, at the moment, I can only do every task to the best of my ability and ask as many questions about the magazine world as I have while I'm in New York. And when I'm really stressed out, there's nothing taking a walk around the block or eating Mister Softee can't fix! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I've also been making a bucket list of things I want to complete before my internship ends. So far, my list includes getting coffee with the site director, sitting in on an editorial meeting, tweeting for @TeenMag, and representing TeenMag.com at a press event! I'd also really like to meet with HR before my time at Teen Mag ends to talk about why I think would fit within Teen Mag's parent company. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
How do you keep calm in when your internship makes you stressed out? Are you getting stressed out about getting hired at your internship? Let me know in the comments section! </div>

Working at Lifestyle Mag is often as glossy as the pages of the print issue. But, it can also be VERY stressful at times, as I found out yesterday.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
Around 2 p.m. I was working on a project when I heard the digital director ask the entire web team why 10 articles in the print magazine hasn’t been uploaded to Lifestyle Mag’s CMS. <br />
<br />
Ruh-Roh.<br />
<br />
The editors thought that the articles weren’t due for an entire week. As I worked away on my project, I listened to the digital director and the editors work their way through the miscommunication. The digital director was INCREDIBLY upset. The entire room went dead silent as she expressed her disappointment. It was by far the most intense moment I’ve ever been a part of at Lifestyle Mag since I've been here.<br />
<br />
The news editor took charge and began assigning articles to the web team. Since my project didn’t have an immediate deadline I decided to stop and help the web team build the articles—I wanted to help them out in any way possible! I’m happy I took initiative and assisted the editors during an incredibly stressful time. I learned a lot in that moment about teamwork, what it means to help others out, and how to learn on the fly.<br />
<br />
So Edsters, here are my five tips for helping out your editor during an tense time:<br />
<b><br />
</b> <b>1. Make your presence known!</b><br />
<br />
Editors are very busy, and if you don’t let them know that you have time to help out, they might overlook you. It’s important to let your editor know that you are ready to help! Send the editor an email (or tell them in person, if they don’t look too busy) to let them know that you would love to lighten their workload in any way possible.<br />
<b><br />
</b> <b>2. Prioritize and create deadlines for yourself.</b><br />
<br />
I knew I wanted to help the editors finish uploading the content, but I also had a few other tasks to complete before the end of the day. In order to keep track of everything that needs to get done, I definitely think it’s wise to make a list. This way you can be sure you won’t forget about a task. The deadlines will also help to keep you on schedule. I love to work from memory, but when it comes to assignments, I have always found that actually writing out a to-do list is key.<br />
<br />
<b>3. Don’t bite off more than you can chew </b><br />
<br />
I wanted to help the editors with every single article…but then I wouldn’t have gotten my own work done. When your offering to help an editor out, make sure you can tackle each assignment in a reasonable amount of time. If you finish the project and have time to kill can always shoot them another email and ask for more work.<br />
<br />
<b>4. Think one step ahead.</b><br />
<br />
Always be thinking about what you need to do next. I love this tip because it has saved me time on more than one occasion! For example, I always request photos from the photo editor as soon as I know I will be building the story—even if I haven’t started writing it yet. It can take a photo editor awhile to collect photos and size them, so I always tell them what I need ASAP. That way, when it comes time for me to add photos to the story, I have them waiting for me in my inbox. <br />
<b><br />
</b> <b>5. If you can do a task yourself, go for it. (Just make sure it’s O.K. with your editor!) </b><br />
<br />
I’ve been able to save the photo editor some time by cropping images myself (thank you, Graphic Design class!) By editing images on my own, the photo editor has time to focus on more time-consuming tasks. If you have a skill that you think would benefit your editors, speak up!<br />
<br />
<b>What about you, Edsters? How do you help your editors out? What was the most stressful day at your internship like? Sound off in the comments! </b><br />

<br />
With the craziness that is working at a magazine, it is important to stay as organized as possible. I have been guilty of forgetting minor details or been in need of a desk clean-up before, especially the more the summer goes on and the long term assignments need to be worked on. Working with editors and other interns has taught me a few tips about staying on track with assignments and not forgetting anything. It is definitely important to remember what you have due and the details your boss gave you. <script type="text/javascript">
var _gaq = _gaq || [];
_gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-11200862-2']);
_gaq.push(['_trackPageview']);
(function() {
var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true;
ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ? 'https://ssl' : 'http://www') + '.google-analytics.com/ga.js';
var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s);
})();
</script><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here are the times I have felt unorganized and tried to find a solution to the messy.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://projectgenerationd.com/images/uploads/tutorials/l/L--Staying-Organized.gif" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://projectgenerationd.com/images/uploads/tutorials/l/L--Staying-Organized.gif" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>When running an errand</b>... I could spare myself a lot of semi-heart-attacks if I kept better track of receipts. I have never lost one but I have by mistake placed them down on a shelf or put them in a mysterious pocket I didn't know I had. Therefore, I find it best to put the receipt in my wallet next to whatever cash I have on me. That way it is easy to notice it when giving it to your boss. Another important tip is to put the company credit card (if given one) somewhere also noticeable in your wallet, away from other cards. </div>
<div>
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div>
<b>When given a lot at once</b>... Keeping track of deadlines, who the assignment is for, and important details for the task can get confusing. This past week I was given a lot at once although the time I needed to finish the assignments ranged. Instead of just flagging the emails sent to me with assignment information, I took out a large post-it and wrote in order from soonest to lastest when everything was due. I also put tons of post-it on my computer with info like my phone number and email addresses. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>When called over by an editor</b>... The rule in our office is always bring a pen and notepad with you when going to an editor's desk. Although it can seem like common sense, I have forgotten to bring something to write on with me at times thinking it was only a small assignment, when in reality it was not. Feel free to devote an entire page to that assignment, it helps stay organized and uncluttered! Besides, it will take a while to through an entire notebook.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>When researching a dense subject</b>... The best of my internship is when I get to research really important topics that are affecting women domestically and across the world. With that in mind, the research on these issues can get long and intense, making me lose track of where I am or what I'm working on. If 6 o'clock comes and I'm in the middle of something the way I keep track of where I was is to re-open my history the next morning. In addition, writing down websites I still need to check or even making a check list helps me most effectively organize. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Because I work besides my editors, I feel that it’s too weird to request an informational interview. For anyone who doesn’t know (I had to Wikipedia the term the first time I heard it), an informational interview is something that every intern should have.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Typically you’ll meet with a higher-up that has a job that you’re interested in, and you’ll ask them any questions you might have about what they do and how they got there.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It’s a great way to evaluate how you are doing in comparison, and what you should do once you’re finished with your internship. </div>
<a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Anyway, I knew I wanted to have an informational with someone, but I wasn’t sure with whom. I decided to look outside of the company.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Back when I was <a href="http://edinterndiaries.blogspot.com/2013/06/introducing-shelter-intern-who-sent-out.html">15 cover letters deep</a> in my search for an internship, I had a phone interview with this one editor in New York. Although the interview went well, Alyssa* wasn’t able to hire me. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After accepting my internship with the Mag, I was offered a paying job with a travel stipend. Alyssa had referred her friend to me, and that referral landed me a paying position.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I was so flattered that Alyssa thought of me, I shot her an email to thank her. Now, only a few short months later, I emailed her again to get coffee and discuss her career. We’re meeting in a few weeks.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The industry has always emphasized the importance of networking—it’s all about who you know. However, it’s important to maintain those relations and strengthen them. I’ve never met Alyssa in person, so strengthening our initial connection is so important. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Even if you aren’t interning this summer, email someone whom you admire and see if they want to grab coffee and chat about their career. <b>Edsters, any other tips for maintaining professional relationships? </b>Sound off here.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Stay proactive this summer, </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Hey Edsters,</div>

Yesterday, I received my mom’s monthly magazine package in
the mail. The package is my lifeline: My mom graciously forwards me 7 pounds
worth of magazines every month so I can keep up with my 10 different
subscriptions that are each equally necessary to my growth as a savvy magazine
industry individual (despite everyone else’s addiction suspicions).<o:p></o:p></div>

I cracked open <i>Marie
Claire</i> and flipped through to my favorite section, <i>Marie Claire @ Work, </i>when a particular headline stopped my flipping
fingers dead in their tracks. It was an article on the “latest type of
workforce discrimination;” apparently, single girls are finding it harder to
retain a work-life balance then the married-with-kids set. Work is getting
delegated to the single people who are assumed to have more time to toss around
at the office, while parents are rigidly retaining a 9-5 work schedule. <o:p></o:p></div>

I’m not sure how valid the argument is, because I know that
if I was a working parent, I would be a whole lot more likely to lay down rules
about when I can and can’t be in the office vs. if I’m single and looking to
work my way up the ladder. As a non-married person, I’m probably much more
likely to take up extra work, whether I need to or not, because I don’t have
the same commitments and I’m eager to show how much chutzpah I’ve got. What
struck me most in the article was what one woman said who was countering the
discrimination argument. “No one respects people who are slaves to the job.
Build the muscle to say ‘no.’”<o:p></o:p></div>

I knew she was expecting me to say yes. We’ve worked
together on and off for over a year now, and she’s accustomed to my dog-like
work ethic. I stared at the email for a couple of minutes, imagining the hours
that would take away from the family (and boyfriend’s family) gatherings that
had been pre-planned and packed into my three-day vacation. And, even worse
then that would be the prickling feeling of stress in the back of my mind that
would set up camp as soon as I accepted the assignment, and wouldn’t dissipate
until I had turned the article in.<o:p></o:p></div>

I know I’m not even an employee of the company yet and, as
interns, the competition is way too fierce these days to make any serious wrong
moves. But maybe there is something to that woman’s quote, that no one respects
people who are slaves to their job. I don’t have enough industry experience to
assert whether that’s true or not, but I do know that I never want to be considered
a slave to my job. At the end of the day, even though this industry would beg
to differ, I refuse to let my work define my life.<o:p></o:p></div>

So, I said no. Specifically, I apologized for not being
available, and said I was traveling home over the holiday so I wouldn’t be able
to complete the assignment. And, at least over email lingo, she seemed totally
cool with it. I’ll watch to see if anything’s changed over the next couple of
weeks due to my decision, but I’m willing to bet that it’s really not that big
of a deal to say no every once in awhile.<o:p></o:p></div>
